PRIDE Resources – Book Lessons for Ages 3 and Up

Share:

These collections of lessons helps guide conversations with children on diverse gender identities and family structures, including gender identity and expression. We know that PRIDE is about celebrating all LGBTQ+ people. We also know that sexual orientation and gender diversity are often conflated. For this reason, we have one resource dedicated to gender diversity and a separate PRIDE resource guide on gay and lesbian families.

Five book covers for "Understanding Gender Diversity" resource: “I Love My Colorful Nails,” written by Alicia Acosta and Luis Amavisca and illustrated by Gusti; “Who Are You?” written by Brook Pessin-Whedbee and illustrated by Naomi Bardoff; “One of a Kind, Like Me (Único como yo),” written by Laurin Mayeno and illustrated by Robert Liu-Trujillo; “My Princess Boy,” written bye Cheryl Kilodavis and illustrated by Suzanne DeSimone; “When Aidan Became a Brother,” written by Kyle Lukoff and illustrated by Kaylani Juanita.

We also know the power of sharing stories. When we listen to each other’s stories, we build empathy. This empathy is necessary if we want to shift our thinking from “their issue” to “our issue.” When we take time to understand bias, prejudice, and discrimination in all its forms, including around gender diversity, we are better equipped to stand up to it.

Five book covers for "Supporting Children with Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Family Members" resource: “And Tango Makes Three,” written by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell and illustrated by Henry Cole; “Love is in the Hair,” written by Syrus Marcus Ware; “In Our Mothers’ House,” written and illustrated by Patricia Polacco; “My Footprints,” written by Bao Phi and illustrated by Basia Tran; “Antonio’s Card (La Tarjeta de Antonio),” written by Rigoberto González and illustrated by Ceilia Concepción Álvarez.
